The Black Rose Shark sculpture has been created using over 6,000 individual black silk roses which have been all constructed individually by hand. The structure is 240 cm long and has been designed to hang. The textural quality of the art piece resembles dead coral reef. Although the colour is inconsistent with the visual of that comparison, it is the texture that is significant in this case. The symbolisation of the texture highlights the depletion of the creature as well as emphasising the effects that humans are putting on oceans in general.
The chosen colour of this magnificent structure is black which represents the sombre context and its association with fear, aggression and evil - of which some may argue are the characteristics of the people who are adding to the issues that the world’s oceans face. However, black can also embody elegance and sophistication simultaneously which bring dignity and represents the shark in a positive light.
